INSIDE VOICES

BEAR X LOREN PAINE

Loren and I navigated our crazy mixed up high school years together after both being assigned ‘7 orange’. Loren is sunshine in human form, a fellow mermaid, an infectious smile, a soul sister.

Give us an elevator pitch

I was born on the island. Where cold turquoise water meets orange lichen rocks. Where the air is scented with myrtle and ocean mist. Where colourful market stalls are abundant with produce and Huon pine woodworks fill old sandstone streets. Beautiful palawa country. I have always been curious of the world, exploring and learning. Joy seems to find me in abundance through the simple moments in-between. I am inspired by the significance of connection in our lives: the connection between people and importance of community, the manifestation of connection through culture; art, food, music, language, buildings… And then the land and ocean; the beautifully delicate and intricate, yet simple reciprocity of nature and ecosystems.

What have you loved so much about living in the Northern Territory?

Albeit the seemingly endless arid scapes, the desert is abundant with life and colour. Red earth vibrantly dotted with wildflowers of yellows and lilac, lush green hues of prehistoric flora, and secret waterholes. But the best thing is the people I met along the way. For the last 3 years, I have been working alongside and learning from Aṉangu Women, minyma wiru, on Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara, Yankuntjatara lands. I find it hard to find words that do justice in honouring  these incredible women. It has been an immense privilege to be welcomed into their communities and homes, immersed in their openness, kindness and contagious joy. Days spent hunting and cooking together, under the beating sun and cool nights under endless stars. Amidst significant barriers, these women embody  incredible resilience, strong lore and culture, their extensive knowledge and continuous capacity to love.

What is the best photo you’ve ever taken? Why?

Ooh this is a tricky one because so many photos bring me so much joy. I think it would have to be ‘washing day in the jungle’. It makes me feel so calm and happy.

Washing day in the jungle

Where do you feel most at peace?

It’s not so much as a place, but more a feeling inside. To accept each moment. When I’m connected with myself, and feel present in my body and surroundings, I feel at peace. So it can be anywhere!

Your next holiday destination is…

We are about to head off to the South Island of Japan for a family holiday skiing! In search of Fresh powder and delicate ceramics.

Where is the most magical swim you’ve had?

In the turquoise waters of Sardegna off our lovely friend’s boat

The most unique accomodation you’ve stayed at?

I love the shack at Sheepwash Bay on Bruny Island. Nestled between the ocean and fruit trees, vegetables, herbs and flowers. Waking up to warm sourdough, hand forged and baked daily right on the property each morning by the Bruny baker. The wooden aromas, the indoor and outdoor baths and the wood fire inside, makes my heart feel so full.

Where is home to you?

Like peace is an inner feeling, home is to me too. Wherever I am with my loved ones, I am home.
