Tasmanian Treasures 3.0
Tasmanian Treasures 3.0
Hello strays!
This chapter of Tasmanian Treasures is the last in this installation. More soon, but for now, soak up all of the recommendations and enjoy Tassie’s off season.
I’m not a coffee drinker, so I can’t attest to the best drop, but I do love a hot choccie! Those of you that are also on the hot choc train know just how tricky it is to get a good one! I’ve done the work for you. My top 3 hot chocolate destinations around Hobart are:
Pigeon Whole (city)
Ginger Brown (hello to the jaffa that rolls around the takeaway lid)
*If you’re going to Pigeon Whole, you must, must, must get yourself a croissant.
For those wondering about my taste in hot chocolate, the answer is not too milky, not too sweet, but definitely chocolatey in a deep cocoa flavour kinda way (bonus points for a powdery white marshmallow).

Take your hot choccie, jump in the car and head to the jewel of Tasmania – the East Coast! It’s known for its see-through water, white sand, and amber rocks. In my opinion, the best way to enjoy the east coast is to camp - salty, sandy and sun-drenched, but if camping isn’t for you, there are so many beautiful Airbnb’s on the coast that are worth a visit!

While you’re on the east coast, take the turn off to Douglas Apsley. After a short drive, and a short walk, you’ll find yourself at Douglas Apsley waterhole – a freshwater pool that’s perfect for sunning yourself like a lizard in the warmer months, or some cold-water therapy in the cooler months.

Close to Douglas Apsley is Bicheno - a hive of good bites. Pop into Bich, the local brewery and try their house made beers. Le Coq is a newer restaurant in the heart of Bicheno and is worth visiting for its whipped Vegemite butter alone (even if you’re vegemite-adverse {sinner} please try it). Governörs does an elite toastie, and I have it on good authority that the burgers are the same!

Given its winter in Tasmania right now, it feels right to include some specials that are 100% more magical in the off season.
First up is Mount Wellington, specifically, the Disappearing Tarn - a freshwater lake that only appears after consecutive days of rain. The tarn is so beautiful so take care of it - stick to the trail, don’t swim, and take your rubbish home with you! On your way down the mountain, there is a shipping container café called The Lost Freight, a fab spot to stop for a treat!

Secondly, New Norfolk. There are so many beautiful shops.

There are a number of antique shops in New Norfolk too, some creepy, some abundant – you explore!
I’m hitting pause on Tasmanian Treasures for now, to bring you recommendations for something a little further afield. Still Australian made – 48 hours in Canberra!
Stray Beautiful,
BEAR.
