When Tess first moved to Melbourne, she met her magnificent housemate Kaela. Lovers of wine, girls nights, gossip & olives, they soon embarked on their journey to find Melbournes best wine bars. After more than a year of careful research, they created an exhaustive list, they have been kind enough to share their top five.
67 Cardigan Place, Albert Park
Come to Wally’s for an orange wine in the sunshine and stay for dinner to watch the world go by. The most extensive wine menu of anywhere we’ve been with European inspired small plates to share. A late afternoon booking to enjoy golden hour in Albert Park is the best way to do it!
17 Morey Street, Armadale
Alberts is our Saturday lunch time go to. Sit under the awnings on the outdoor terrace and drink the best limoncello spritz we’ve found in Melbourne. Special mentions must go to the charred leeks and the most spectacular bread and olives. Our favourite location for small plates shared among friends!
53 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy
If we have anything to celebrate, you’ll find us at Marion. If the giant bowl of olives isn’t enough to lure you to sit at one of their gold tables, the promise of Melbourne’s best negroni (in our opinion) should certainly do the trick. It is not a trip to Marion without one of their famous flatbreads per person (at least).
179 St Georges Road, Fitzroy North
Snacks at the communal table while the chefs cook just behind you makes for an impossibly entertaining evening at Public Wine Shop. We let the wait staff choose us a red, and if it’s up our alley - we buy a bottle to take home. Olives as always, and the spelt flat bread are the stars of the show.
202 Commercial Road, Prahran
The ultimate date night destination. Going to Don’s feels like being part of a very fun family with whom it’s completely acceptable to have soft serve for dinner. Monday night pasta date night is truly iconic and not to be missed, however a Sunday afternoon orange wine at the bar is certainly one of our most treasured pass times. Don’s takes the chocolates for number one!
